Hearts that are fed with messages that are more than skin deep will sing a different tune. I did not study overseas. I haven’t spent significant amounts of time elsewhere. Manila is very much my home. There is no secret pill to my writing.
I grew up listening to music. I’ve gone through so many phases. I remember getting obsessed with Electronica, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Pop, R&B, Blues, Folk, Local and Rock at different points in my life.
The part that has heavily informed my vocabulary is Rock. There are artists who have more to say than just money, fame, sex and fairy-tale love. They write the songs that I always love to listen to. They write like poets. Sometimes, they go in circles. Sometimes, they are honest.
Those musicians are the ones I desperately hope more people would learn to appreciate. Not all songs are good just because we’re made to think they’re cool. That’s why I put up this list.
The part that has heavily influenced my thought process is Jazz. I get very excited whenever I listen to records of artists who improvise. That means they do multiple takes armed with fake books and the melodies in their souls. Not all songs are formulaic. Jazz musicians fake it till they make a song.
I guess what I want to say is that our thoughts are a result of the things that we put in our heads. There’s a lot of trash in my head because of the past. In that respect, my heart is fractured.
Things get better if you want them to.
